52 weeks of free things to do!

I’ve decided to create a new series of blog posts about free things that you can do to entertain yourself, your friends and family. It’s way too easy to look back at a weekend and realize that between seeing the latest movie and grabbing lunch out you’ve gone through $100.00 without trying (and sometimes without even enjoying the movie). Over the course of a year that is bound to add up. So….I’ve come up with a list of 51 free things to do instead of spending money. I want to

(Almost) one full year of free things to do

Here is my list of 51 free things to do. I am committing to doing one of these free things every week for the next year and then banking the money saved. I'm also taking readers suggestions for the very last week. Any (legal!) suggestions will be added to a master list and then at the end of the year I will select one at random and send the reader a free $100.00 gift card for a store of their choice. The same rules apply, it has to be free to do, it has to be something I can

Rising interest Rates – What does it actually mean to you?

There has been a lot of talk about rising interest rates in Canada and their impact on ‘Average People’. There so many articles from major Canadian news outlets talking about the impact the latest interest rate hike will have on the average Canadian’s ability to get a mortgage, pay off an existing mortgage, pay off consumer debt, or even make major purchases. The thing that is missing is a way for you to guage the actual impact of an interest rate on your wallet. That's what

    Point in time thinking

I read an interesting article on LinkedIn this morning (#MoneyWiseGirls). It was about teaching young women and girls personal finance topics so that they had the same level of knowledge as their male counterparts. The article had great suggestions for financial literacy and control, but it was the comments that really struck me. So many of the people who left comments spoke of currently feeling stuck in their own financial journeys. Do you recognize that feeling? The feeling

What is the value of money?

It sounds like an odd question for a financial coach to ask, but bear with me. Understanding what you really believe about money and how you relate money to your core values is the first step in taking control of your finances. We all have deep beliefs about how money intersects with our values. Whether it’s ‘money equals security’, or that ‘having money is a measure of my achievements’ or that ‘creative people aren’t ‘good’ at money’. There are so many places where we try to

    Where do we start?

Welcome to Positive Net Worth! I am starting this because.... I want to help women get out of debt and gain control of their relationship with money. I've spent most of my career in finance and adult education. After some recent big life changes I decided to retire from working in corporate finance. Last year I was working with an executive coach when she asked me a critical question that made me reevaluate what I was doing with my life. She asked me who I was helping. Who wa
